The Feoffees of Today

The role of the Feoffees has evolved quite considerably since those original four gentlemen provided the finance to buy the lordship of the manor from the Berkeley Estate, with their modern day role being that of trustees of various charities whose main aims are for the benefit of the residents of Tetbury. Following various amalgamations and up dating of the individual charitable aims, the latest being in 2005/6, the Feoffees are now solely responsible for the day to day running of the three charities:

1) THE ROMNEY CHARITY (more commonly known as The Tetbury Charity Estate). This charity owns various properties throughout the Tetbury area, including the Market House, The Chipping, the Herd Lane and Berkeley Wood open spaces, and various plots of land around the town. It is also responsible, on a 999 year lease, for the maintenance and upkeep of Preston Park, a large open space area on the edge of Tetbury, which with Herd Lane and Berkeley Wood, provides a major rural environment for general recreational use by both residents and visitors alike. In addition to maintaining these properties the charity is also empowered to use its surplus funds for both, relief of the poor and for educational purposes.

3) THE ROMNEY EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION. The Foundation provides financial assistance, by means of grants, for the advancement of educational and vocational training for the children and young people of Tetbury and Tetbury Upton.

In common with the original Feoffees, the trustees still derive their income from the assets under their stewardship but, in this day and age, it is now utilised to provide and maintain the properties soley for the benefit of the town, with surplus revenue being used for educational, vocational, recreational and other worthy causes which meet the charitable aims outlined.

Since the latest consolidation and up dating of the various aims and objectives of the remaining charities, The Feoffes have, and are carrying out on going improvements and maintenance to their properties and during the last five years £60,000 has been spent on the Market House, £23,000 on the open space areas, including Preston Park, Berkeley Wood and Herd Lane and £45,000 on the Chipping area which includes the historic Chipping Steps. Finance has also been provided for the Millennium Green, which does not have any external income sources, and £11,500 has been spent maintaining this facility. Future committed projects are already in the pipeline for 2010 during which £15-20,000 will be spent on the Market House and £14,000 has been put aside for improvements to the Millennium Green water features. Plans are also underway on landscaping and planting work in the open space areas, all of which are intended to benefit and improve the local enviroment. In addition to this expenditure the Feoffees are still endeavouring to improve the funding available for their educational and vocational aims and whilst they are proud to have donated over £15,000 in individual and other grants during this same five year period, it is hoped to increase this level of support in the future.
